Honor These Heroes

AKA

Funeral Ballad

© 2007 Laurence E Butterfield

Song performed by Mike Lusk
and studio musicians from
A Writer's Paradise Recording Studios
in Nashville, TN

Verse:
We went to a funeral, way up in Maine
Of a fallen hero, we knew not by name.
We showed up, not by chance
But because of others planning on attendance.
Hundreds of peace protestors
About as welcome as molesters
Playing to the media hype
I’m sure you know the type.
From all over the country they came
As if they were attending an important game.
On this grieving family and little city
They were not to show an ounce of pity.

Chorus:
Let us honor these heroes we lay to rest
Never more to return, to their family nest
Not by picking this venue to protest a war
But by honoring the fallen and oh, what they died for

Verse:
They sought attention throughout the land
At the expense of this soldier, who died in the sand.
They claimed to support the troops, but not the war
Haven’t we been down this road before?
Community, they had all gathered ‘round
To support a scene that had become so profound.
The streets were lined as if waiting for a parade
What a volatile scene it made.
Risking injury and arrest we went
All to assure that the proper message was sent.

Chorus:
Let us honor these heroes we lay to rest
Never more to return, to their family nest
Not by picking this venue to protest a war
But by honoring the fallen and oh, what they died for

Verse:
They fought for your right to be free
Even your right to protest and disagree.
But there is a time and a place
Without you having to show disgrace.
Don’t dishonor this hero and event
I hope this is not what you meant.
Let us bury and honor our troop
We can do so without your group.
By protestors this funeral will not be molded
The flag will be properly presented and folded.
And as the guns fire their final Salute
Better you stay far away and remain mute.
You can protest another day
Or do it very far away.
Here today, I may not be right
But make my stand, ready to fight.

Chorus:
Let us honor these heroes we lay to rest
Never more to return, to their family nest
Not by picking this venue to protest a war
But by honoring the fallen and what they died for

I sincerely hope that you will pass this song on to others who might enjoy it.
